Disaster Preparedness/Crisis Response Committee

Promote disaster and emergency preparedness and planning in the Redwood Heights School community. Provide educational activities related to preparedness, planning, response, and mitigation for parents, staff, and students. Improve the school community's resilience to all types of disasters.

Volunteers only need a desire to assist; professional disaster expertise is not required.

Garden & Field Science Program

The American Public Health Association urges schoolyards to include natural landscaping and school gardens.

Why?

Garden-based learning activities provide the following benefits:

  • Higher academic achievement (better test scores) and improved attitudes toward education
  • Increased physical activity, decreased stress, and better performance on tasks that require focused attention
  • Improved immune system functioning (including lower levels of asthma)
  • Healthier eating habits and better nutrition

RHS has had a strong commitment to outdoor education and that commitment has become stronger with the development of our new outdoor classroom and Living Laboratory for Learning.

Special thanks to Charles Smith and Leroy Stokes of OUSD, Sara Stone, Cynthia Bagby-Ellison, Emily Fuentes, the California Native Garden Foundation, the City of Oakland, Waste Management, the RHS PTA, the RHS Dad's Club and the many, many parents and students for all of their volunteer hours!

Holland Group

If you are a parent/caregiver of a student(s) that may present mild to moderate learning differences, sensory integration disorder or behavioral problems linked with ADD/ADHD - diagnosed or not, we would like to invite you to become a part of our support group.  Here's an opportunity to meet other parents and talk through similar situations.

By working together with the parent and school community we have a chance to increase our understanding of similar problems, share resources, and develop educational strategies, thereby creating an academically and socially rich environment for all RHS learners.

Historically this parent group would meet in the RHS Library on the third Tuesday of the month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.  If you are interested in being a part of this group or volunteering to lead this group, please contact Jennifer Wilson. (This parent group is actively seeking a new parent leader. If you are interested please contact Courtney Turk).

LGBTQ Affinity Group

The LGBTQ Affinity Group meets monthly to provide support to all LGBTQ parents, caregivers, and heads of household in the Redwood Heights School community and to advocate for inclusive policies, practices, and curriculum to advance equitable student achievement and to make RHS a safe and welcoming place for our students and for all students.

Historically this group has met monthly for 1-1.5 hours.

This parent group is actively seeking a new parent leader. Meeting times & location to be determined after a Parent Leader is identified.
